NoFollow Links, Squarespace SEO

Squarespace is a great website builder for so many reasons, but one of those reasons is not because they make adding "nofollow links" easy. Before we begin, I just want to say that adding nofollow links in Squarespace is easy, but we are going to be using code, so please don’t be put off by this.

Being relatively new to SEO and website design, I got frustrated when I tried to add a nofollow link into a text block. Turns out, you can't. Instead, you need to use the 'Markdown' block. This is where you can add text, but the main difference is you have the option to edit using HTML or Markdown Syntax, meaning you can add the nofollow link code without running into any unwanted formatting issues.

Here’s where to find the Markdown block.

What is a Markdown Block?

Simply put, Markdown is a tool that converts plain text markup to rich HTML. Essentially, it makes it easy to style text without using HTML because you can use syntax. Markdown syntax simplifies the formatting process considerably by using symbols like hashtags and asterisks to style text instead of HTML tags. Markdown also allows us to add custom code into our text, such as nofollow links.

Where to Add the Nofollow Links

Paste your raw text into the Markdown block, then locate where you want to add your nofollow link and paste the code at the beginning of this article next to the text. Then you need to update both the link and the visible text. As you will see, the Markdown block appears exactly the same as a text block but you have more options to make edits and changes.

Congratulations, you just added your nofollow link. Once you know how Squarespace works, it’s pretty straight forward. I hope this was helpful and good luck with your SEO efforts.
